Let’s go see the world!
The next day Fraisette and Pommette were busy with their Mommy and Daddy and I was left to create my own adventures. With my growing confidence, I decided to explore the world outside my door. I found out that I was less than one hundred yards from a beach! It was rocky and filled with shells, seaweed and trash. It was not sandy. The tide went out for over a mile.
What new adventures can I experience from this bench?
I sat on a bench and watched! Oysters were harvested by driving tractors out over the beach. I was fascinated that the tractors went out so far that they were no longer visible from the shore. I sat for hours and hours and just watched all the machines coming and going. I saw trucks full of oysters, people collecting shells for dinner and people just walking hand-in-hand on the beach. It was hot but the constant breeze made it seem comfortable. I sat until the tide came in. I was alone on my bench above the beach.
New confidence
Since I knew that no one would be home until very late at night I decided to go for a walk. I picked a direction and continued on the path. I walked past tall walls that protected houses from the sea. I continued hoping for a new adventure. It appeared! I found a big sand beach with people. I decided to explore more and found our little town. It was bigger than I had expected. It had shops, restaurants and even a very small supermarket. I sat on the bench in front of the ice cream store and watched the people. The children licked ice cream cones and smiled. After enjoying all the children I walked the rest of the town.

I found the market, several cafés, the post office, the church, and even the train station. I decided that if I ever became very courageous I might go on a train and see beyond my town. That was for another day maybe? I walked home. This time I decided, bravely, to walk home on the street and not by the beach. I walked past several beautiful old homes with gardens. The smell from the flowers was breathtaking. All the smells were so refreshing and new to me. I floated home. Momy was not home yet so I returned to the headboard and fell asleep.
A day to ponder
I awoke again on the headboard the next morning. I decided I must be exhausted since I sleep every night in my Momy’s arms but I wake up on the headboard. I am so sound asleep that I do not even notice when I am put on top of the headboard. I decided to stay home today to rest and sit by my door and think.
Many questions?
I realized that I have many unanswered questions. How do I call Fraisette and Pommette or the Big Brown Bear? How do I get a bear phone? How do I buy food or get euros? I have been eating what is in our refrigerator and just now realized that I might need to buy food if my adventures take me too far away. Maybe I should learn how to pack a picnic? How will I understand any of the signs or speak to anyone I meet? I need that bear phone to call IB and find out all her tricks. She must have so much information after all those years here. I need her to share her knowledge with me so that I can have more exciting adventures.
Is this French television?
I decided to watch television. I watched television on the plane and played with the remote so I thought I was experienced in watching television. I tried to turn on the television. It was not easy. The remote was in French. Finally, I succeeded. The TV had a very small screen; the picture was in black and white, and there were only five channels. It was not very interesting. Many of the shows were either cartoons or American television shows dubbed in French. I did love something they called publicité. These were advertisements. They did not interrupt the show with ads but waited until the show was over and showed all the ads at once. All the ads had scantily dressed beautiful women and it was hard to tell what the ad was trying to sell to you. It was very different from back home where all the commercials seemed to be selling beer and have screaming men. I became bored with the television and decided to go for a walk.
